CVE-2025-40909· NVD / CVE Program· CNA CPANSec

Perl threads have a working directory race condition where file operations may target unintended paths

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Monitor (action score 23/100)

  • The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.50% (FIRST EPSS).
  • Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. No account or password is required. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
  • Fixed version: azl3 perl 5.38.2-509 on Azure Linux 3.0 5.38.2-509; cbl2 perl 5.34.1-491 on CBL Mariner 2.0 5.34.1-491; cbl2 perl 5.34.1-491 on CBL-Mariner 2.0 5.34.1-491.

Low priority for now. Upgrade to azl3 perl 5.38.2-509 on Azure Linux 3.0 5.38.2-509; cbl2 perl 5.34.1-491 on CBL Mariner 2.0 5.34.1-491; cbl2 perl 5.34.1-491 on CBL-Mariner 2.0 5.34.1-491 or later.

Generated automatically from the record's data: CVSS (NVD and CNA), CISA KEV and SSVC, FIRST EPSS, exploit sources, fixed versions. How we calculate it

Perl threads have a working directory race condition where file operations may target unintended paths. If a directory handle is open at thread creation, the process-wide current working directory is temporarily changed in order to clone that handle for the new thread, which is visible from any third (or more) thread already running. This may lead to unintended operations such as loading code or accessing files from unexpected locations, which a local attacker may be able to exploit. The bug was introduced in commit 11a11ecf4bea72b17d250cfb43c897be1341861e and released in Perl version 5.13.6
